Bogota, Sep 13 (IANS/EFE) Colombian authorities intercepted a speedboat carrying 2.2 tonnes of cocaine and arrested the vessel’s four-person crew, an official said.

The operation took place Saturday night in the Gulf of Uraba, said the commander of Colombia’s Caribbean fleet Adm. Cesar Augusto Narvaez.

Personnel from the navy and police, with support from the US Drug Enforcement Administration, detected and intercepted the cocaine-laden vessel near Cabo Tiburon in the northwestern province of Choco.

The 2,268 kg of cocaine found aboard the speedboat was bound for the US via Central America, the navy said in a statement, adding that the drugs apparently belonged to the Los Urabenos criminal organization.

Colombia’s Caribbean fleet has confiscated more than 26 tons of cocaine this year, Adm. Narvaez told EFE.
