Tokyo, May 29 (IANS/RIA Novosti) The operator of the tsunami-hit Fukushima nuclear power plant Sunday restored the cooling system and fuel pool at reactor No.5, officials said.

The Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO) said the cooling system was restored early Sunday after its work stopped late Saturday and is now expected to lower temperatures at the nuclear reactor and the fuel pool.

An earthquake and a tsunami that swept northeastern Japan in March damaged the cooling facilities at Fukushima, which resulted in serious radiation leaks.

Japan’s nuclear authorities assigned the highest level of danger to the Fukushima disaster for the first time after the devastating Chernobyl nuclear accident in the Soviet Union in 1986.

TEPCO expects stabilisation of the crippled reactors to take around six to nine months.
