Rio de Janeiro, May 5 (IANS) Peru international striker Paolo Guerrero struck a late goal as Corinthians secured a 1-0 victory over promoted Chapecoense in Brazil’s Serie A championship.

The former Bayern Munich player fired a powerful shot into the bottom left corner after Jadson’s assist at the Arena Conda stadium in the southern city of Chapeco Sunday, reported Xinhua.
The result lifted Corinthians to the top of the standings with seven points from three matches. The Sao Paulo-based outfit are ahead of Cruzeiro, Internacional and Goias on goal difference.
At Rio’s Maracana stadium, Alecsandro netted a brace as Flamengo rallied from behind to defeat Palmeiras 4-2.
In other matches Sunday, Goias beat Atletico Mineiro 1-0, Internacional overcame Sport 2-1, Criciuma defeated Figueirense 1-0 and Bahia beat Botafogo 1-0.
