Havana, Nov 27 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban government has mobilised its military commands as part of the strategic drill ‘Bastion 2009’ aimed at strengthening country’s defence against enemy attack, mainly by the US, a Prensa Latina report said.

On the first day of the three-day drill, country’s provincial defence councils were instructed to assess any difficult situation in their territories.

Military and other officials based their training on the actions carried out during the periods of crisis in order to confront a hypothetical large-scale enemy aggression.

During the other two days of the drill, different types of manoeuvers and tactical exercises will be carried out with the participation of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR), the interior ministry and other elements of the defence system, the report said Thursday.

There will be movement of troops and war equipment as well as jet fighters and explosions, if necessary, according to the organisers of ‘Bastion 2009,’ the first such training in five years, the report added.

FAR Deputy Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Leonardo Andollo, said that the drills will be carried out with austerity, but efficiently, referring to the current economic limitations and US threat.

The first such drill was carried out in 1980 and the last in 2004.
