Dhaka, May 14 (IANS) Bangladesh and Russia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to facilitate setting up nuclear power plants in Bangladesh and transfer of related technology.
Similar MoUs were signed with the US and China some months ago.
Bangladesh has been wanting to build a nuclear power reactor at Rooppur in Pabna district in its northern region since 1961.
Currently, it wants to set up two 1,000 MW power plants.
Acting Chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission Mohammed Mosharraf Hossain and Deputy Director of Russian Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation N.N. Spasskiy signed the deal here Wednesday, The Daily Star reported.
As per the MoU, the two countries acknowledged that the use of nuclear energy would be for peaceful purposes.
“Russia will assist in the development of nuclear energy infrastructure in Bangladesh,” reads the MoU.
As per the understanding, Russia will supply Bangladesh with nuclear materials and provide services in the field of nuclear fuel cycle in accordance with national legislations of the two countries and international treaties to which both Bangladesh and Russia are parties.
