Cairo, July 1 (IANS) Egyptian security forces killed nine militants on Wednesday during an exchange of fire at October Six district in Giza, state-run Al Ahram news website reported.
“The militants are of the most dangerous terrorist members nationwide and they were killed in a fire exchange while the security forces attempted to arrest them,” Ahram quoted General Magdy Abdel-Aal, senior official at Giza security department, as saying.
The confrontation came a few hours after terrorist attacks on military checkpoints in the restive North Sinai province left a number of soldiers dead and injured, Xinhua news agency reported.
On the other hand, a military spokesman said on Wednesday that the armed forces killed 22 militants in Sinai and they are currently launching air raids on their hideouts in the peninsula.
The bloody clashes came one day after the second anniversary of the June 30 mass protests that toppled former Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in mid-2013.
