Wimbledon, June 30 (IANS) Swiss Tennis ace Roger Federer and Spanish star Rafael Nadal stormed into the men’s singles second round of Wimbledon by beating Damir Dzumhur and Thomaz Bellucci respectively on Tuesday.
Federer was clinical in his Wimbledon opener, needing only 67 minutes to defeat Bosnia’s Dzumhur 6-1, 6-3, 6-3. The World No. 2 hit 26 winners to 12 unforced errors and faced no break points during the contest. On his service games, Federer averaged no more than nine seconds between points.
It was the second Grand Slam in a row in which Federer had knocked out Dzumhur. The pair had squared off in the third round of this year’s Roland Garros tournament, a match which Federer also clinched in straight sets.
In the second round, Federer will take on American Sam Querrey, who ousted Dutchman Igor Sijsling 7-5, 6-3, 6-4. The seven-time Wimbledon champ has never dropped a set against Querrey. It will be the pair’s first meeting on grass.
Two-time Wimbledon champion Nadal got off to a roaring start, defeating Thomaz Bellucci 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.The No. 10 seed hit 21 winners and saved four of the six break points he faced in the two hour, 10-minute match.
Nadal improved his head-to-head record against the Brazilian to 5-0 as he advanced to the second round, where he will face Germany’s Dustin Brown.
Last year, the Spaniard lost to then-World No. 114 Nick Kyrgios in the fourth round, the first time a World No. 1 lost to a teenager at a major since Nadal defeated Federer at Roland Garros in 2005.
Earlier, Brown defeated Yen-Hsun Lu 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the second round for the second time. The German’s best showing here was a third-round berth in 2013.
