Suva (Fiji), Feb 28 (IANS) Police are keeping a close watch on massage parlours in Fiji’s capital city Suva as many of them are suspected to be operating as brothels, a media report said.
Most of the massage parlours are reportedly hiring Asian prostitutes, Xinhua reported, citing the Fiji Times.
Authorities have warned owners of the massage parlours operating as brothels to stop all illegal activities before they are faced with the full brunt of the law.
So far, managers of seven massage parlours have been charged with conducting illegal activities from their premises.
Atunaisa Sokomuri, Fiji police spokesman, said: ‘We are targetting massage parlours that are suspected of operating as brothels in Suva.’
‘Under the new crimes decree, we are going down hard on prostitutes,’ Sokomuri said.
Sokomuri said police officers were always on street patrol in the city and keeping a close watch on prostitutes and their operations.
People caught by police for allegedly engaging in prostitution were being taken to task.
Law enforcers are also cracking down on foreign girls who indulge in prostitution on the city streets every night.
