Colombo, Jan 12 (DPA) A female supporter of the former army commander who is standing for president was shot dead by political rivals in southern Sri Lanka Tuesday, police said.
A bus carrying supporters of General Sarath Fonseka in Ranna, Tangalle town, 220 km south of the capital, was sprayed with gunfire, injuring at least 10 people, police said.
The victims claimed that supporters of the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) were involved in the attack, police said.
The UPFA candidate, incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa, faces a tight race against the war-hero and retired general in the Jan 26 election.
Election monitors said they had received over 350 complaints of shooting incidents, attacks on rival supporters and cases of intimidation over the past four weeks.
