Tegucigalpa, June 29 (IANS) Former Honduras president Manuel Zelaya said Monday that the US government was behind the coup carried out against him June 28 last year.
The coup was planned in the military base of Palmerola in central Honduras by the South Commander of the US ‘and clumsily executed by bad Honduran people,’ Zelaya said in a letter.
‘The authors of this crime (the coup) obey to an illegal association of the old hawks of Washington with Honduran people, owners of the capitals and their partners from the North American subsidiaries and financial agencies,’ he was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
Zelaya was seized from his bed by soldiers and forced to go into exile in neighbouring Costa Rica. He later chose to live in the Dominican Republic after Porfirio Lobo, winner of last October’s presidential elections in Honduras, was inaugurated as Honduran president in January.
