Los Angeles, June 1 (IANS) Hollywood heavyweight Mel Gibson’s comeback movie ‘Edge of Darkness’ will release in India June 25. The actor was last seen in a full-fledged role in 2003 movie ‘The Singing Detective’.
‘Edge of Darkness’ sees Gibson, 54, as Thomas Craven, a veteran homicide detective and a single father who ends up investigating his only daughter’s murder and unravels an intersection of politics and big business behind it.
‘Mel was our first and only choice for Craven. The part called for someone of his caliber…. there aren’t a lot of actors who have the kind of gravitas that he has,’ director Martin Campbell said in a statement.
In last seven years, Gibson may not have featured on big screen, but he wielded the megaphone for two critically-acclaimed movies – ‘The Passion of the Christ’ (2004) and ‘Apocalypto’ (2006).
‘Edge of Darkness’ is based on the BAFTA award-winning BBC mini-series with the same name and it was also directed by Campbell more than 20 years ago.
‘Someone suggested the possibility of making it into a film about five years ago. I thought it was a great idea. I’ve always felt it was a very powerful story – a father loses his daughter and goes on a journey of discovery not only to find out who killed her and why but also who she really was,’ said Campbell.
‘He’s someone who loved his daughter and thought he understood her, but what he discovers is that she was involved in a whole way of life that he knew nothing about,’ he added.
Having released in the US Jan 29 this year, ‘Edge of Darkness’ also stars Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, Bojana Novakovic and Shawn Roberts.
The movie is being released in India by PVR Pictures, the film production and distribution arm of PVR Group in association with GK Films Production. So far, PVR has distributed over 60 Hollywood movies in India, including the first two instalments of the Robert Pattinson starrer ‘Twilight’ franchise and ‘Remember Me’.
