Santiago, Jan 3 (IANS) About 500 people were evacuated after a massive forest fire broke out in a preserve in Chile, Xinhua reported.

The blaze broke out Monday in the Torres del Paine National Park in southern Chile.

Chilean President Sebastian Pinera said that four of the six areas that caught fire were brought under control.

He added that there was still a lot of work to do to control the situation. About 230,000 hectares of forest were affected, Xinhua reported.

More than 700 people, supported by helicopters, were fighting the inferno.
