Washington, April 2 (DPA) The man who shot dead a Kansas abortion doctor was sentenced Thursday to 50 years in jail, which will likely see the killer spend the rest of his life in prison.
In May 2009, Scott Roeder, 52, walked up to his victim, George Tiller, during church services in the town of Wichita and shot him in the forehead.
Tiller, then 67, was one of the country’s few physicians who performed late-term abortions and had survived a previous attack in 1993.
Sedgwick County District Judge Warren Wilbert issued a so-called “hard 50” sentence which means Roeder cannot seek parole before he has served at least 50 years, the Kansas City Star reported online.
Roeder was found guilty during the trial in January, when he insisted he had killed Tiller to protect unborn children.
