Male, Feb 10 (IANS) The Maldives government has approved the death penalty for murderers and will soon enact regulations on the process of execution with the help of lethal injection.

Presidential spokesperson Ibrahim Muaz Ali said the cabinet ministers observed an increase in the number of murders in Maldives and agreed that the execution of death penalty was possible in accordance with existing laws, the Haveeru reported Monday.
The cabinet has decided to draft detailed regulations regarding actions taken in investigations and prosecutions with regards to the death penalty, Ali said.
The cabinet advised the president that death with the help of lethal injection would be the best option and this must be included in the regulations.
Home Minister Umar Naseer had issued an order to make preparations to implement the death sentences, requiring the use of lethal injection for execution.
