Cape Town, Dec 17 (IANS) A billboard honouring former South African president Nelson Mandela near Cape Town has been defaced and damaged, authorities said here Tuesday.

The incident came to light after the end of 10 days of mourning to honour and celebrate the life of the anti-apartheid icon, who died of illness Dec 5 at the age of 95, Xinhua reported.
The billboard is located at the Dullah Omar Centre on Hazel Road, Rylands near Cape Town, the second most populated city in South Africa after Johannesburg.
Early Tuesday morning, the leadership and membership of the African National Congress Robert Waterwitch Thornhill branch, were horrified upon discovering a desecrated Madiba (the clan name of Mandela) memorial billboard, said branch chairperson Majid Mowzer.
