New York, Sep 9 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Andy Murray reached his second US Open final after a comeback victory against Tomas Berdych in a match played in gale-force winds.
Severe gusts sent chairs and racquet bags flying across the court, even whipping off the Briton’s cap at one point, but the third seed kept his cool to turn around a first-set loss for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6(7) win Saturday.
He sets up a final with fourth seed David Ferrer or second seed Novak Djokovic, who resume their semi-final later Sunday with the Spaniard 5-2 up in the first set. It was suspended with the storm approaching.
The 25-year-old Scot is having the best year of his career with a second consecutive Grand Slam final, after Wimbledon, and an Olympic gold medal.
“Whatever happens in the final, it’s been a great year,” Murray said. “But all I want to make sure I do in the final is that I give 110 percent. I know how hard these opportunities are to come by, and I will give it everything.”
Murray’s other US Open final appearance was in 2008, when he lost in straight sets to Roger Federer.
Berdych, who racked up a whopping 64 unforced errors to Murray’s 20, insisted that play at Flushing Meadows should have been suspended earlier in the day.
“I think that our sport deserves to have some rule or if the conditions are like that you don’t play because of the rain,” the 26-year-old said.
The storm forced the postponement of the women’s final between world No.1 Victoria Azarenka and Olympic champion Serena Williams to Sunday.
