Auckland, July 8 (IANS) A New Zealand radio jockey broke the world record for the longest non-stop radio broadcast Thursday, but fell asleep soon after.
Uawa FM radio jockey Nikora Curtis broke the 175-hour record at 1.10 p.m. and was hoping to make it to 200 hours, but fell asleep shortly after making it to 176.5 hours.
‘The celebrations (after the record) used up the rest of his energy that he had,’ the station’s programme director Dexter Waru was quoted as saying by the New Zealand Herald.
Over 250 people turned out on to the main street of Tolaga Bay town to count down to the record. But shortly after the celebrations, Curtis went back to attempt to get to 200 hours but was too tired and fell asleep.
‘He passed the record and that was our goal, so he’s done that and put Tolaga Bay on the map,’ Waru said.
The stunt was attempted in a bid to raise money for the small radio station. A sum of $5,000 in donations has been collected till now.
