Seoul, Aug 20 (DPA) North Korea said it is in agreement with China that the six-nation talks on its nuclear weapons programme should be resumed.
Those talks as well as the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula were discussed when China’s special envoy to the peninsula, Wu Dawei, visited Pyongyang this week, North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency reported.
‘They reached a full consensus of views on all the matters discussed,’ the agency said late Thursday.
Wu visited the North Korean capital Monday through Wednesday after China repeatedly called for a quick resumption of the six-nation talks, which are aimed at ending the North’s nuclear arms programme.
North Korea broke off the talks in April 2009 after a new round of UN sanctions were imposed on it. It said again in July that it was prepared to return to the negotiating table with China, the US, South Korea, Japan and Russia but made no concrete promises.
Four months before that, a South Korean warship sank, killing 46 sailors, in an incident Seoul and Washington have blamed on Pyongyang. The two allies have demanded North Korea take responsibility for the sinking before discussions over a new round of the six-nation talks take place.
North Korea has denied involvement in the sinking of the corvette.
