Rome, Feb 18 (Inditop.com) The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has said the number of hungry people exceeds one billion worldwide.

IFAD president Kanayo Nwanze made the remarks during his organisation’s 33rd governing council meeting Wednesday to consider agriculture as a key resource to tackle the problem.

The UN body said the number of malnourished people reached one billion in 2009, and 31 countries depend on food aid of which 20 are in Africa, Prensa Latina reported.

Italian President Giorgio Napolitano, who attended the opening of the agricultural forum, stressed that the international community must take into account new food emergencies.
