Bogota, Feb 23 (Inditop.com/EFE) One inmate was killed and 19 wounded in clashes at a prison in the southwestern Colombian city of Cali, but authorities managed to regain control of the facility, officials said.

Groups of inmates in a cell block at the prison in Villahermosa fought as part of a larger struggle for control of the penitentiary, which houses about 600 prisoners, said the bureau of prisons, known as Inpec.

“The taking of power inside the cell block was apparently the cause of the confrontation, this cell block holds approximately 600 inmates, the majority of them for common crimes,” Inpec said.

Leon Daney Mora, who was being held on kidnapping charges, was killed in the clashes.

Several shots were fired and a fire was started during the disturbance. The Cali fire department put out the blaze.

The situation was quickly brought under control and the injured inmates were taken to Hospital Universitario del Valle, officials said.
