Washington, Dec 29 (IANS) A man was taken into custody after firearm parts were discovered in his checked luggage on an American Airlines flight from Boston to Miami, a media report said.
The incident began Tuesday afternoon when a luggage handler reported hearing a small explosion inside a piece of baggage on the tarmac of Miami International Airport, New York Post reported.
The Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) confirmed that the bag had been searched by law enforcement officials and that firearm parts were found inside.
An FBI official confirmed the passenger who owned the bag was a 37-year-old naturalized US citizen, but his identity was not released.
He was charged with travelling in interstate commerce without a licence to carry ammunition and was scheduled to appear in Miami federal court Wednesday, Michael Leverock, spokesman for the FBI bureau in Miami told Fox News Channel.
The explosion sound was caused when several primers — the small metal caps inside bullets — came out.
There were 148 passengers and six crew members on board the flight. No flights have been reported delayed or cancelled because of the incident.
