Dhaka, Dec 18 (IANS) Protestors in Bangladesh Wednesday burnt the Pakistani flag and demanded expulsion of its high commissioner following Islamabad’s reaction over the execution of Jamaat-e-Islami leader and war criminal Abdul Quader Mollah.
Scores of protestors Wednesday evening gathered outside the Pakistan high commission in Dhaka’s Gulshan diplomatic enclave after they broke through the barbed wire barricades placed outside the high commission, Xinhua reported.
A shoe was also thrown at the Pakistan mission in Bangladesh.
Nearly 1,000 activists shouted anti-Pakistan slogans.
At least seven people, including a leader of the protesting group, Ganajagoron Moncha, were injured during the clashes with the law enforces.
Police later evicted the protesters from the high commission gate.
The Ganajagoron Moncha Tuesday announced the march towards the Pakistan high commission to protest Islamabad’s interfering with the execution of Mollah.
Mollah, assistant secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami party, was hanged Dec 12 for crimes against humanity in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.
The Pakistan national and provincial assemblies Monday adopted resolutions expressing concern over Mollah’s hanging.
Bangladesh’s ministry of foreign affairs Tuesday summoned the Pakistan High Commissioner Mian Afrasiab Mehdi Hashmi Qureshi and lodged a “strong protest” over Islamabad’s move.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan Friday expressed deep grief and concern over the execution of Mollah.
Bangladesh won independence from Pakistan in 1971 after a nine-month war. The Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami with Mollah as its leader had sided with Pakistan during the war.
About three million Bangladeshis were killed in the war.
