Dhaka, Dec 28 (IANS) Angry journalists from media houses in the Bangladesh capital Wednesday staged demonstrations, burnt tyres and vandalised vehicles after a fellow journalist’s right leg had to be amputated after a bus ran over him.

Nikhil Bhadra met with the accident in front of the Jatiya Press Club, the Daily Star reported.

Witnesses said a bus of the Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation hit the 40-year-old reporter of Bangla daily Kaler Kantha around 9.45 a.m. Wednesday.

Journalists from many print and electronics media houses staged demonstrations and demanded the immediate arrest of the bus driver. Common people also joined the demonstrating journalists.

Police official Rezaul Karim said Nikhil Bhadra’s leg was amputated from below the ankle. Police seized the vehicle but the driver fled the scene.

Communications Minister Obaidul Quader and Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad visited the journalist at the hospital and assured him of bearing the cost of his treatment.

The government also formed a five-member committee headed by the joint secretary of the communications ministry to probe the incident.
