Tehran, April 17 (Inditop.com) Iran Saturday called for restructuring the UN Security Council and forming an independent international body to review the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to achieve the goal of global nuclear disarmament.

Accusing the Security Council of becoming “a tool for materialising policies of certain bullying powers”, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the international body has not been able to safeguard national security and rights of any country.

There are currently over 20,000 nuclear warheads across the world, half of which are in the US, Ahmadinejad pointed out at an international conference on nuclear disarmament.

The conference titled “Nuclear Energy For All, Nuclear Weapons For No one” was attended by the representatives of more than 60 countries.

Ahmadinejad called for reviewing the NPT by independent countries and those states not having nuclear weapons.

He also underscored the need for restructuring of the Security Council, IRNA reported.

Criticising the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), he said the UN nuclear watchdog, instead of disarming countries possessing nuclear weapons, had been turned into a tool for exerting pressure on those countries which do not have nuclear weapons.

The president underlined the need for setting up an independent international group for planning and supervising over nuclear disarmament and said the group should suspend membership of those countries possessing, using and threatening use of nuclear weapons at the IAEA and its Board of Governors.

He also voiced Iran’s readiness to continue cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog within the framework of its rules and regulations.

The Islamic Republic of Iran, as a country which is making use of peaceful nuclear energy through efforts by domestic scientists, is ready to provide all IAEA members with its useful experiences, he said, adding that Tehran is ready to play constructive role in the disarmament process.
