Moscow, Dec 17 (IANS) Special units of the Russian interior ministry’s troops have been deployed in the 2014 winter Olympics host city of Sochi to ensure security, the ministry said Tuesday.
“The 10,000-man group of the interior troops has started to implement its duties of guarding Olympic village and other venues in Sochi, as well as to maintain public order,” Interfax news agency quoted Chief of Staff of the interior troops Sergei Bunin as saying, reports Xinhua.
The troops will be deployed in that Black Sea resort city for three months, he said.
Russia had promised that the upcoming Olympic Games will be safeguarded in an “unnoticeable” way that does not hinder the enjoyment of the spectators.
Security authorities earlier said they would control some part of the territories in and around Sochi from Jan 7 to March 21, including all Olympic venues and infrastructure, as well as the coastal Olympic Park and the mountain cluster of skiing facilities.
The 22nd Winter Olympic Games are slated for Feb 7-23, 2014, with 98 sets of medals up for grab.
