Moscow, Nov 1 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Ailton struck twice as Terek Grozny reached the quarterfinals of Russian Cup football, beating Lokomotiv Moscow 3-1 after a gruelling extra-time battle.
The match Wednesday finished 1-1 after 90 minutes before defender Rizvan Utsiev put Terek ahead with a stylish half-volley and Ailton scored after the break in extra time to increase the hosts’ advantage.
Terek now face FC Rostov in the quarterfinals after Rostov defeated Spartak Moscow on penalties Tuesday, while Slaven Bilic’s Lokomotiv have now gone five games without a win.
Ailton has now scored five goals in eight games for Terek since joining from APOEL Nicosia last month, and opened his account Wednesday from the penalty spot on 26 minutes.
Lokomotiv’s ex-Manchester City forward Felipe Caicedo took the match to extra time when he struck on 82 minutes in a keenly fought match that occasionally turned bad tempered, with nine yellow cards awarded.
In extra time, Terek’s Ferreira headed the ball across goal at a free-kick and found Utsiev at the far post. The captain let the ball drop before firing a half-volley past goalkeeper Dario Kresic for a 104th-minute goal.
Ailton stretched the lead when he rose highest to score with his head at a corner early in the second half of extra time.
