Toronto, June 22 (IANS) Shots were fired early Tuesday from a moving vehicle near the venue of this week’s G-20 summit here, police said.
According to police, three shots were fired from a black BMW in the city’s Entertainment District near the summit venue early Tuesday morning. With more than 5,000 security personnel cordoning off the yellow security zone around the venue, police have launched a hunt for the vehicle. Three cases of a small calibre gun have been recovered from the area.
With world leaders yet to arrive here for the G-20 summit June 26-27, protesters are already swarming the venue.
In the first incident of violence, about 100 protesters took over a convenience store at a gas station run by ExxonMobil’s Esso near the summit venue.
‘Corporations like Esso have caused irreparable damage all over the world. There is a lack of housing. This is our housing now,’ the protesters shouted before they were removed by police.
Dozens of organizations such as Amnesty International, Greenpeace, and Canadian labour unions and student unions have planned to disrupt the summit.
Canada is spending more than $1.2 billion on the G-8 and G-20 summits this week.
