Washington, July 31 (IANS) Indian tennis player Somdev Devverman caused a major upset at the ATP 500 Citi Open by defeating defending champion Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine 6-3, 7-6 (7/4).
The Commonwealth gold medallist beat the ninth seed and world No.25 Dolgopolov to advance to the pre-quarters Tuesday, where he will face the winner of the match between eighth seed John Isner and his compatriot Alex Kuznetsov Thursday.
The 28-year-old served nine aces compared to only five by Dolgopolov, who also committed eight double faults. Somdev, ranked 129 in the world ATP rankings, made only one double fault and won 25 first serve points.
Devvarman, a two-time US college champion ranked 104 spots below Ukranian, finally seems to be regaining his fitness after a prolonged battle with injuries.
Somdev had earlier overcome Rhyne Williams of the US in the first round.
