Madrid, Aug 22 (IANS) Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso suffered a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot while training, Real Madrid announced on their official website.

The accident took place Wednesday at Real Madrid’s training complex, the Valdebebas. Although the club has not said for how long the 31-year-old would be out, local media says he will not play for around three months, reports Xinhua.
Another Real Madrid player, Brazil’s Marcelo, was operated for the same fracture in October 2012 which forced him to miss a total of 19 matches last season.
Alonso broke his foot only two months after he underwent a groin surgery in Munich last June, which prevented him from playing in the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.
He was expected to play in Thursday’s Santiago Bernabeu Trophy against Qatar’s Al Sadd but will miss the match and others such as Spain’s three remaining 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers or the first “El Clasico” of the season against FC Barcelona Oct 26.
Alonso joined Real Madrid in 2009 from Liverpool and his contract finishes in 2014.
