Miami, Sep 29 (IANS/EFE) Spanish actor Marco De Paula confesses that, although he has played other roles during his career, the characters he enjoys most are those who are scoundrels, such as the insidious seducer he plays in the soap opera ‘Esperanza del corazon’.
‘All the characters provide you with some of their richness, but the scoundrel takes you to the dark side…I enjoy exploring that part that to a greater or lesser degree many people carry inside themselves,’ he told EFE in a telephone interview from Mexico, where the Univision soap opera is being filmed.
De Paula enjoys great popularity in Spain, where he had the starring role in the successful television series ‘Valientes’.
But when he got the chance to ‘cross the pond’ to work in one of acclaimed producer Luis De Llano’s productions, he didn’t think twice.
‘When I read the script, I fell in love with my character at first sight. He’s a psychiatrist and has two faces; he knows how to manipulate people, because he knows their weak points. He’s very Macchiavellian,’ said De Paula, who began his career as a model at 17, when a talent scout discovered him in his native Seville.
At 18, he traveled to Madrid and three years later he made his debut as an actor.
‘The transition from model to actor was not difficult, although it’s true that many people prejudge you because they think that the more good-looking you are, the less talent you have. I’ve had to work hard to earn respect,’ he said.
