Colombo, June 21 (IANS) Sri Lanka’s main opposition United National Party (UNP) said Monday it will oppose a proposed move to change the country’s constitution.
UNP spokesman Gayantha Karunathilake told reporters that the government was on anti-democratic path and opposition parties would oppose the reform process, Xinhua reported.
Among the main changes that are being discussed is to allow the president a third term. The present constitution adopted in 1978 allows only two terms for a president.
President Mahinda Rajapaksa with his successful military action over Tamil Tiger rebels is thought to be wanting to run a third time.
The cabinet early this month had approved the move to change the constitution.
