Kabul, May 14 (Inditop) A suicide bomber attacked a police station in the southern province of Kandahar Thursday, killing one policeman and wounding four, a police commander said.
The attack, the third in as many days in the war-torn country, took place Thursday morning in Spin Boldak district close to border with Pakistan as a bomber tried to enter the district’s border police headquarters with his explosive-packed vehicle, said General Saifullah Hakim, the border police commander in the region.
The police personnel guarding the station identified the bomber and tried to stop his car, he said, but the attacker detonated his vehicle at the gate, wounding five police officers, one of whom later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.
The Taliban took responsibility for Thursday’s attack in a statement posted at the rebel website, saying that Noor Mohammad, one of their fighters, carried out the attack.
The statement claimed that 27 police officers, including two commanders, were killed in the attack.
In the south-eastern province of Khost a bomber targeted the main US military base Wednesday, while nearly a dozen suicide bombers attacked several government buildings in Khost city Tuesday. The bombings in Khost, which is also close to the border with Pakistan, left at least 16 people dead and dozens more wounded.
Taliban militants warned last month that they would increase their attacks on Afghan and international military forces in response to deployment of 21,000 additional US soldiers, who are expected to arrive in the country in coming months. Currently around 70,000 foreign troops deployed from 42 nations are stationed in Afghanistan.
