Kabul, July 28 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Afghan Taliban fighters killed a senior police official in the town of Lashkar Gah in Helmand province of Afghanistan, authorities said.

Two armed men attacked police chief Mardja Khadji Nur Ali and his son as they returned home late Wednesday evening from a mosque, the governor’s press secretary said Thursday.

The Taliban also attacked the home of the provincial police chief in Logar province Thursday evening, said the regional governor’s press secretary, Din Mohamed Dervish.

The regional head of the People’s National Council, Abdul Wali Wakhil, was in the house during the attack, Dervish said.

‘The attackers shot at the house with rocket grenades and a gun battle broke out with the security guards,’ a source said.

The gunfight went on for at least a half an hour, after which the attackers withdrew, Dervish said.

The Afghan officials were not injured in the attack but the Logar province police chief’s home was badly damaged, he said.

The attack follows the killing Wednesday of the mayor of Kandahar in his home.
