Los Angeles, June 1 (IANS) Lawyers of former Liberian President Charles Taylor have opposed a request to have supermodel Naomi Campbell testify at his war crimes trial in the Netherlands.
The prosecutors have asked the court to subpoena Campbell to testify about claims that Taylor gave her a blood diamond as a gift.
Taylor’s British lawyer insists that anything Campbell might say in court will be irrelevant to the case and he accuses prosecutors of making the request as a publicity stunt, reports imdb.com.
However, prosecutors say Campbell’s testimony would provide ‘direct evidence of the accused’s possession of rough diamonds’.
Taylor is charged with 11 counts of murder, torture, rape, sexual slavery and the use of child soldiers and terrorism during Sierra Leone’s 1991-2002 civil war.
