Dar es Salam, March 30 (IANS) At least three people died and 17 seriously injured when a 16-storey underconstruction building collapsed in Tanzania’s commercial capital city of Dar es Salaam Friday, Xinhua reported.

The accident occurred at 8.30 a.m, a city official said while cofirming the deaths.

Several people remained unaccounted for till last report as many were reported trapped in the rubble of the building situated at the junction of Indira Gandhi Street and Morogoro Road.

Rescuers worked round the clock to pull out people from the debris, as local television stations reported over 60 people were killed in the grisly accident.

Excavators were being used to remove debris while the rescuers were poorly equipped, making the rescue mission slow and painful.

Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete visited the accident site along with his wife Mama Salma Kikwete.
