Jammu, April 19 (Inditop) An army jawan and a special police officer were killed in a gun battle with militants Sunday in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district, police said.
The incident took place when militants ambushed a patrol party of the soldiers and the police in the Ghat area of Doda, 180 km from Jammu. Ghat is one of the militant infested areas near the district headquarter town of Doda.
“When specific information was received (about the presence of militants), the area was cordoned off to nab the militants present there,” Deputy Inspector General of Police Hemant Lohia said.
He said as the security forces were zeroing in on the militants, they came under heavy fire in which one soldier and a special police officer were killed.
Security reinforcements have been deployed and the gun battle is on, Lohia said adding that at least two militants were holed up within the cordon.
Police said the militants have increased their presence and want to target the polls in Doda district, part of Udhampur-Doda parliamentary constituency that is going to polls on April 23.
