Lisbon, Oct 30 (IANS) Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has rejected Sporting Clube de Portugal’s request for a replay of their Champions League match with Germany’s Schalke 04 due to alleged refereeing errors.

“The protest put forward by Sporting was considered inadmissible by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body,” UEFA said, reports Xinhua.
Sporting wanted either a replay of the controversial Oct 21 match or compensation of 500,000 euros. They lost 3-4 to Schalke as Russian referee Sergei Karasev called a handball and awarded a penalty to Schalke deep into injury time. Footage of the game showed that the ball hit Sporting defender Jonathan Silva in the face.
Schalke occupies second place in Group G behind front-runners Chelsea, followed by Maribor and Sporting.
