United Nations, Dec 31 (IANS) UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Wednesday called on all parties in Gambia to exercise restraint and refrain from further violence after an attempt to overthrow President Yahya Jammeh was foiled Tuesday.
Ban also encouraged a transparent investigation into the attempted coup, the statement issued by Ban’s spokesperson stated.
Ban also urged the government of Gambia and its security and defence forces to act in full respect for human rights.
He reiterated the UN’s condemnation of all attempts to seize power through unconstitutional means.
The attempt to overthrow President Yahya Jammeh was foiled Tuesday following overnight shootings in the Gambian capital of Banjul, in which at least five military officers were killed and several others arrested.
