United Nations, April 25 (Inditop) A UN Security Council committee has imposed sanctions on three North Korean companies in response to the country’s April 5 rocket launch.
The sanctions committee made the decision in accordance with a recent Security Council presidential statement which requested it to list by Friday additional goods and entities subject to sanctions under Resolution 1718, adopted after Pyongyang’s nuclear test in 2006.
The three North Korean companies are Korea Mining Development Trading Corp., Korea Ryongbong General Corp. and Tranchon Commercial Bank, accused by the UN body of having links to the country’s military activities.
Turkey’s UN envoy Baki Ilkin, who chairs the UN Sanctions Committee on North Korea, said the panel had agreed to update a list of “items, materials, equipments, goods and technology whose import to and export from North Korea are prohibited”.
Pak Tok Hun, North Korea’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, told reporters that his country does not recognise the decision made by the Security Council.
“The discussion on the sanctions in the Security Council against North Korea for its satellite launch is itself a wanton violation of UN Charter as well as relevant outer space laws and conventions,” he said.
“It is an inalienable right of every nation and country to make peaceful use of outer space,” Pak added. “That’s why we totally reject and do not recognise any sort of decision which has been made and would be made in the Security Council.”
On April 13, the Security Council adopted a presidential statement to “condemn” the April 5 rocket launch by North Korea, reiterating Pyongyang “must comply fully with its obligations under Resolution 1718 that prohibits rocket launch.
