United Nations, May 1 (IANS) UN staff would be leaving the Libyan capital of Tripoli, a spokesperson for the organisation’s humanitarian office told Xinhua Sunday.
Stephanie Bunker, spokesperson for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said international staff was pulling out of Tripoli ‘due to unrest in the city’.
She said there were originally eight international staff members in Tripoli, but this number may have changed before the decision was made to have them leave.
Libyan nationals on the UN staff will remain in the country, Bunker said.
Apart from Tripoli, the UN also has staff in Benghazi, currently the stronghold of rebel forces.
Bunker said staff in Benghazi will remain where they were.
Though it was impossible to determine when the UN staff will be able to return to Tripoli, Bunker said in such cases the UN will ‘examine the situation continually and make the determination about when they can return’.
