Sao Paulo, April 8 (IANS) Construction has resumed at Brazil’s Itaquerao stadium as organisers race against time to complete construction work at the venue for this year’s FIFA World Cup.
Brazil’s labour ministry allowed workers to return to the site Monday, nine days after a 23-year-old man fell to his death while installing temporary seats, reports Xinhua.
According to the ministry, contractor Fast Engenharia has pledged stricter safety measures, including more support cables, guard rails and a mobile platform.
The northern part of the stadium remains closed as Engenharia completes the installation of safety nets.
Initially budgeted at $400 million, the stadium’s redevelopment is understood to now be valued at $480 million.
Builder Odebrecht says the 68,000-seat venue will be ready by early May.
The Itaquerao will host six World Cup matches, including the tournament opener between Brazil and Croatia June 12.
