New York, Aug 21 (IANS) A few construction workers’ unions have refused to work in building a mosque at the site of the Sep 11, 2001 terror attack in New York, and termed it as a ‘sacrilege’.

Construction workers have started a ‘911 Hard Hat Pledge’ to gather union members to refuse to work at the site near Ground Zero, Fox News reported citing the BlueCollarCorner blog.

Andy Sullivan, a field supervisor for a union said to be behind the pledge, asked fellow workers to refuse to help build the Islamic mosque and cultural centre in Lower Manhattan.

‘My fellow Americans stand together and pledge not to work this hurtful insensitive project. Without us, this sacrilege cannot be built,’ Sullivan wrote.

The planned structure has turned into a national debate after US President Barack Obama offered support for the project.
