Yaounde, May 21 (IANS) Over 400,000 children in Africa are born with AIDS each year, a UN official said Friday.

The situation is worrying because a third of those babies die before their first birthday for not having access to treatments, said Michael Sidibe, executive director of the joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).

Another 50 percent of the infected babies die before the second year of their lives, Sidibe said.

According to medical sources, 60 percent of those infected in Sub-Saharan Africa are women, Prensa Latina reported.
