Beijing, May 30 (IANS) China has taken over 400,000 hectares of Russian land on lease near the international border, for agricultural purpose.

Heilongjiang province in northeast China, which took on lease 426,667 hectares of Russian land, shares a 3,038-km-long border with Russia, Global Times reported Sunday citing a statement by the provincial agriculture commission.

The province hopes to use the land for farming, animal breeding and product processing purposes, the commission said.

Mudanjiang, a border city in Heilongjiang province, alone has leased 146,667 hectares of land in Russia. It has 16 mills and two lipid-processing plants in the Russian land.
