Mumbai, June 2 (IANS) A benchmark indices for Indian equities closed 201 points higher in volatile trade Wednesday.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 16,574.79 points, shut shop at 16,773.55 points (provisional), 201.52 points or 1.22 percent up from its previous close at 16,572.03 points.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share S&P CNX Nifty ended at 5,027.9 points, up 1.16 percent from its previous close at 4,970.2 points.

Broader markets indices also closed in the green, with the BSE midcap index ruling 0.9 percent up and the BSE smallcap index 0.83 percent higher.
