Batala (Punjab), June 3 (IANS) A three-year-old girl who fell into a 200-feet deep, two-feet wide borewell near here in Punjab died Thursday, after rescuers took more than 20 hours to reach her.

Dilrajpreet Kaur fell into the borewell in Dhira village while playing in the courtyard of her uncle’s house Wednesday.

Initially, the police tried to rescue the child but called the Indian Army after realising they needed more skilled expertise.

‘The child had skidded 29 feet. Though we tried our best to save the child, our efforts were futile. We pumped oxygen to help the child breathe and we watched her activities through a camera lowered into the borewell,’ said revenue official Manjit Singh.

Soldiers brought the child out of the borewell around 1.30 p.m. Thursday and took her to a hospital here. Doctors said she was dead by the time she reached the Batala Civil Hospital.

In 2006, five-year-old Prince, who fell into a 53-feet deep shaft in Shahbad in Haryana, was saved after two days of frantic rescue operations.
