New Delhi, June 3 (IANS) Indicating her opposition to a caste-based census, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar Thursday said she wanted a casteless society as had been the ‘aim of the founding fathers of the Constitution’.
Asked whether she supported a caste-based census, Meira Kumar told NDTV news channel: ‘I want a casteless society.’
She said the caste has always divided the society. ‘For years… for centuries…we have been in difficulties because of this caste.’
‘I have always worked towards a casteless society. The aim of the founding fathers of the Constitution has been to establish casteless society,’ said the first woman speaker of the Lok Sabha, who completed one year in office Thursday.
‘Anything which leads to that it would take us further to that direction is welcomed by me,’ she said.
Meira Kumar also rejected the media reports that she is likely to be the chief ministerial candidate of the Congress in Bihar.
