Washington, June 15 (DPA) General David Petraeus, head of US military operations from the Arabian Gulf to Central Asia, collapsed Tuesday during a Senate hearing into growing problems for NATO troops in the Afghanistan conflict.
Petraeus grew faint while testifying before the Senate committee, but was able to leave the room under his own power, leaning on someone for support, broadcasters reported.
After being examined by a physician, he returned to the hearing room, and noted that he was apparently dehydrated from not drinking enough water in Washington’s early summer heat.
The committee decided to postpone the hearing until Wednesday, when the House of Representatives had also planned to hear Petraeus’ update on Afghanistan.
