Port Elizabeth, June 18 (DPA) Serbia brought high-flying Germany back to earth Friday with a sensational 1-0 victory over the former champions to keep their hopes alive in Group D of the football World Cup.
Coming off a 4-0 win over Australia, Germany went a man down in the 37th minute on Miroslav Klose’s second yellow card. Milan Jovanovic took advantage of the situation in the 38th minute and gave Serbia the lead with the only goal of the game.
Serbian keeper Vladimir Stojkovic stopped a penalty attempt by Lukas Podolski in the 60th minute. The Serbs struck the woodwork twice in the final 23 minutes at Port Elizabeth stadium.
Serbia remained in the hunt for the Round of 16 with three points in Group D while Germany also have three points. Ghana (3 points) were taking on Australia (0) later Friday.
