Bhubaneswar, May 1 (Inditop) The death toll due to the heat wave sweeping across Orissa has risen to 18, an official said Friday.
“The Dhenkanal and Khordha districts have reported highest of four deaths each, the districts of Jajpur and Balasore reported two deaths each,” D.N. Sahu, officer on special duty in the state revenue control room, told Inditop.
“One death each was reported from the districts of Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Ganjam and Jagatsinghpur,” he said.
The state government has received allegations of about 75 deaths due to the heat wave. Of them 21 were found to have died of some other ailments. “We are awaiting reports related to 36 other alleged deaths,” he said.
Orissa is reeling under a severe heat wave with some areas witnessing temperatures over 45 degrees Celsius.
On Thursday the industrial town of Talcher, some 170 km from here, recorded this season’s highest temperature of 46.2 degree, S.C. Sahu, director of the Bhubaneswar meteorological office, told Inditop.
“The heat wave conditions are likely to prevail over some parts of the state during the next 24 hours except in the south coastal parts of the state”, he said.
